I covered the loose wire with electrical tape. That seemed to not stick to the wire as much, allowing it to be pulled off later without breaking the wire, while still protecting it from me clumsily snagging it on something and snapping the wire (a second time -- The first time round, I just left it loose....)

I've only built the one though... if others who have built lots see this, maybe they'll chime in too...
