How to ask for help

Postby Bayley » Sat Jan 12, 2013 7:44 pm

So you've put together the oneTesla kit, and it doesn't work the first time around. Don't panic!
First, to state the obvious, read the manual. Make sure you've correctly followed the troubleshooting steps in the manual - nothing causes more frustration than a spurious bug brought about by erroneous troubleshooting.

If that doesn't help, and you're making a post asking for assistance, here are some good things to keep in mind:
  • Include pictures! A picture is worth a thousand words, and gives everyone a lot more to work with.
  • Be specific. "MY COIL DOESN'T WORK" is not a very useful piece of information. Describe what problems you're having, which troubleshooting step fails, etc.
  • If you have a scope, include scope shots of key waveforms, especially abnormal ones. The way a waveform is wrong often indicates why it is wrong.
Tesla coils are complex projects - don't feel bad if yours takes a few tries to get working! That's why this forum is here - so that the collective knowledge of the community can be put to good use. We also suggest that you ask for help via forum post rather than PM. Not only does it give you more opportunities to receive help, it also builds a knowledge base of information in the forum for future users.
