She keeps striking herself

Postby bytecode77 » Sun Nov 09, 2014 6:06 am

As you can see on the attached photo, she tends to hit herself. Sometimes her primary and secondary exchange a strike. On the right part of the image you can see that she even strikes into her inside!

Should I be worried about either of that? I mean, she is still working...Image

the right photo is it flashing over, that should be avoided. Eventually the coating on the secondary will get burnt through and it will do it constantly.

the left photo is okay, as long as it doesn't strike anything inside, which could cause the IGBT's to fail or the driver to behave unpredictably.

yes you should worry about it. Especially when you get strikes from the breakout point, what appears to be the heatsink.

Not sure what is causing that tho, as i am not an expert and i dont think i have ever seen a onetesla do it

It's the GND cable that goes to the secondary.

the right photo is it flashing over, that should be avoided.
How do I do that?

It seems that the streamers will preferably/generally go out from the breakout point, but just in case, i would not place the tesla coil that close to the furniture, as shown on the pictures...

Bending your discharge point rod around the circumference of the toroid to the center like you have it lowers it closer to the base. Being closer to the base increases the risk and occurrence of flash over. Run the rod across the top and/or make it longer and point it more upward. The flash over can damage your tank capacitor. You also run the risk of damaging the logic circuitry which is designed to operate on 5.1 volts max.

Add a protective "strike rail". This is simply a piece of 1/4 inch copper coil tubing (refrigeration tubing- get it at Home Depot or Lowes) with a diameter about 2.5 inches larger than the primary coil diameter, mounted on plastic standoffs about 3/4 inch below the top of the primary coil.

There must be about a 2 inch gap between the ends of the strike rail coil to prevent it from "stealing" energy from the primary and crippling the performance of the tesla coil.

Finally, IT MUST BE GROUNDED, or it will not offer any protection.
