Is it possible to get drum sounds on channel 1 or 2?

I'm using Reaper and for the life of me I can't figure out how to get a drum track (channel 10) to route to channel 2 and still be drum sounds. Since the coil can only handle 2 notes at a time, I want melody notes to be on channel 1 (success!) and drum notes to be on channel 2 (fail!). When I route channel 10 to channel 2, it takes on whatever instrument is assigned to channel 2 and I can't figure out how to change that.
